What should be a first of the month post somehow seems to get pushed farther and farther back as other things pop up. Last month it was packing, this month… well I arrived in Australia on March 1st, how was I going to write then? I know, not an excuse, but it is… kind of.
So far I haven’t done much exploring of the Australian shopping malls and clothing boutiques, aside from a quick stroll around the mall last weekend. From what I have concluded so far, finding stores in Australia that rival my American favorites will be tough!
It’s only March, which means the weather is warm in Florida and still warm in Australia. Even though it’s already fall (autumn) here, I could honestly get away with the same clothes at this time of the year in both locations. With that said, my March Wish List features items from America that could be worn in the warm March weather no matter which country you may be in.
American Eagle Flower Dress: This dress is simply sweet. I love the pattern on it, and the pockets! What girl doesn’t love a dress with pockets?
J. Crew Factory Surf Shirt: I love this shirt for wearing in America during the spring and summer, or in Australia anytime. Newcastle is surf town, and although I can’t surf, it’s somewhat the norm here. Why not look the part?
Anthrolopogie Elephant Top: This peasant top is loose fitting, and has the cutest elephant details around the waist. I would without a doubt pair this with white or black shorts, gladiator sandals, and gold bracelets.
J. Crew Factory Mini Skirt: While I don’t usually opt for a mini skirt, the color of this one caught my attention. This would be a definite must to try on in store, and paired with a light color oxford shirt and ballet flats or boat shoes depending on the desired look and occasion.
LOFT Maxi Dress: I have been searching for a simple black maxi dress for a few months. I considered buying this at 40% off in February and opted for the black maxi from American Eagle below. I am still thinking about this one though. I could see it serving the purpose I am looking for: simple and able to be dressed up or down. There might just be too much personality on this dress for me. I am keeping it on my Wish List anyway.
J. Crew Factory Maxi Dress: I put this dress in the collage in pink color just so my Wish List didn’t look so black and blue. I already own a maxi in pink, but this one comes in black, grey, or blue too. If only I was in America, the moment I saw it I would have been at my closest Factory store to try it on.
Anthropologie Embroidered Tank: Zoom in on this one, the details are gorgeous! I love simple clothes that I can dress up, but this one comes already dolled up for me. Just the right amount personality. I love the colors and beading, as well as the cross detail of the black shirt.
American Eagle Cobalt Dress: I bought a similar dress in February that didn’t work out so well, but the color was gorgeous; cobalt is a striking color on most people, me included. I own a cobalt blue dress in a crepe fabric that is on reserves for only wearing when I have a job, but the soft silky chiffon fabric of this dress makes it a date night worthy piece.
J. Crew Factory Dot Tee: Since moving to Australia I have spent the majority of my days blogging, lounging, or going for walks around the neighborhood. I only brought 3 t-shirts with me that aren’t college frat shirts, so pretty t-shirts like this one have started to catch my eye.
Anthropologie Floppy Hat : I saw this hat in the store a week before I moved. Tried it on. Loved it. Left without buying. I started kicking myself for not buying this hat on the spot, because for the next few days I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I also have an Anthropologie gift card sitting in my wallet waiting to be spent. Four days later I couldn’t take the regretful thoughts, so I got in the car and drove to Anthropologie to buy this hat. I scoured the store looking for it, only to find out it had been sold. Since then I still think about this hat… to buy online or not?
Anthoropologie Pattern Skirt: I love clothes that remind me of quilts. My mom is a quilter and I have a couple patchwork pajamas that remind me of the quilts she makes. This skirt reminded me a of quilt because of the different pieces of fabric that are not all the same, but come together to make one gorgeous skirt.
Anthropologie Silk Dress : This dress caught my eye in store and online. When I look at this dress I feel like I am on vacation in Morroco, it just transports me to a brand new country and I feel like exploring, or going to dinner on a sandy beach. I can’t get the idea of travel out of my head with this one, and who doesn’t want to travel?
Items Purchased in February:
Like any other girl before moving across the world I wanted to go shopping! However, this thought didn’t come to me until three days before I moved. I also purchased two Golden Totes in February, so I didn’t think shopping was all that important prior to my move. With days in America numbered, my schedule was packed with things to do and people to see. I ended up ordering four items online (the maxi dress in two sizes) because I wasn’t sure what the shopping situation would look like in Australia. I also rushed next-day shipping so there would be enough time to try on/take back what didn’t work. These are the items I purchased, all from American Eagle.
What do ya know? All of these went back. Here’s why:
The Jeans: I featured this pair in January as ones I thought would be perfect “everyday” jeans, and they would be, on someone an inch smaller than me. These were not a perfect fit, and are an online only item, which means I could not try on a new size in the store. I am still a big fan of the American Eagle High-Waist jean, just not these.
The Blue Dress: I honestly love this dress. I bought it for the color and the back detailing; it inspired my Wish List item above. Cobalt blue is a color that I think works in three seasons, fall, spring, and summer. If this dress had worked on me I would have paired with a black leather jacket and booties in the fall, a tan or denim jacket in the spring with ballet flats, or solo with sandals in the summer. So why didn’t it work? Well, it may have fit better in a larger size… or not. I tried it on, and the way the bottom half settled onto my hips made my hips look even larger than they already are. A larger size may have helped in the way the dress fell on my body, or it may have just looked too big all around.
The Black Maxi: Prior to American Eagle updating their website to include full pictures of this dress, and photos of a model wearing it, I ordered this in two sizes – determined that this was the black maxi dress I was in search of! It seemed like the perfect casual or the dress up maxi. A basic dress I could not go wrong with – boy was I wrong! When it arrived it looked nothing like the pictures. The back was so “racerback” that it crisscrossed and left a giant keyhole, now visible in the photos, but was not made clear on the website in the description when I purchased. It also has a giant slit up the front side leg that goes pretty high on a short girl. This was dress was taken off faster than I could get it on, and was a big fat return. If you look at the photos now, you can see all the things I mention about this dress that I didn’t like, and looking back on it, if I had seen those photos before ordering, I never would have ordered it.
I may try my luck again with American Eagle because I do like their clothes for casual wear, but their sizing can be tricky, so I will not be shipping to Australia.
