If you recall I wasn’t too pleased with my May tote and ended up sending the entire tote back, minus one ridiculously cute add on. This month I decided to do my GT shopping strategically. Planning everything out in advance I would buy two dresses from the boutique and then one $49 tote with a striped tee. All together I would get 4 items for around $140. Loyal Golden Toters might be surprised by my decision; after all I could get a $149 tote with six items and then add on anything from there at a lower price. While this thought crossed my mind I wanted only what I wanted, surprises didn’t matter to me much as I’ve got a ton of clothes already, and I had just paid for my international flight back to Australia so my bank account took a hit.
Speaking of Australia, I should preface now that the way I styled my June tote is with what I have currently in America. Half of my clothes are Down Under, along with my shoes and accessories; so I made due, borrowed from my mom, and included some inspiration and ways I plan to wear my tote when I return home. Home… I just called Australia home! 🙂
The day after the sale began I decided that I must have this tropical jumpsuit so I tacked it on to my purchase as well. To my surprise I received everything two weeks later. On the GT website it states they will do their best to ship everything ordered the first week by Friday of the second week… this time shipping started on Friday of the first week! Yay!
Here’s a look at what I got in my tote. Please ignore the fact that the Florida sun was beating down on me at noon when we shot these photos… I left for a vacation later that day and it was literally my only chance to get in the shots before sending some of my items back.
My first pick from the boutique was this simple eyelet sundress. For some reason I tend to try on clothes late at night, with minimal light, and in a room with only a vanity mirror; that combination of details would make anything look bad on any body. With that said, my first reaction with this dress was, “holy hips and belly!” Being a naturally hippy and curvy girl enhancing my hips isn’t flattering, so this dress was an instant no. As you check out the next items in my tote compare them to this dress, you’ll see what I mean.
When I tried this dress on again the next day to model it for my mom and take some photos I looked at myself and thought hey, my hips don’t look too bad in some of these.
**Looks back in mirror** Wait, huge hip alert! This doesn’t look good.
Also learned that extreme sunlight is also not flattering. Remind me not to do that again. See what I mean?
I really liked this dress because it was simple, the eyelet patter was adorable and sweet, and…. POCKETS!! Unfortunately, this dress was not made for my body type, and those pockets that I loved so much only added more fabric to my hips. This dress went back to Golden Tote.
Although I wasn’t a fan of the eyelet dress on myself, it is being sold on Shop Ruche if you think this would be a great pick for you! // Similar stripe dress // Similar stripe dress // Similar eyelet dress//
My next pick was the Venice Vacation Dress… and the clouds covered the sun for this one! My initial reaction with this one in my vanity mirror was “No Way!” Then I realized that maybe eating a full country meal with fried chicken, mac & cheese, coleslaw, and sweet tea is probably not recommended before trying on clothes. Gosh, I am chock full of little tips on what not to do when trying on clothes today aren’t I?
The next day I put this dress on again, and I actually liked it, a lot. The person who wasn’t loving it, my mother. Now, I’m old enough to not need my mom’s opinion on what I wear, however, she’s my best friend, and when your best friend says, “I don’t really like dress,” start to reconsider what you are wearing. I rationally talked myself through whether or not to keep this one, that internal chat went something like this:
This dress didn’t look good last night.
This is super cute today.
Oooh, these photo look so much better in the shade, wish I would have tried the eyelet dress on now.
When would I wear this dress?.. Probably not to eat fried chicken.
I wonder if it would be too tight if I wear it to dinner.
I might have to get a new bra to make the back of this one work. I like it.
I won’t wear it that often…
And on and on I went trying to decide what to do. Ultimately this dress was returned to Golden Tote as I wasn’t sure when and where I would wear it, and didn’t want to go through the trouble of getting a special bra.
My final pick was the Road Trip Tee which I ordered in the $49 tote.
When I first saw this one I thought I would pass, and then that lovely best bud of mine, aka my mom, said “I like that,” so I gave it a go. I am so glad I did as it was adorable and comfortable; once I put it on I didn’t want to take it off!
My favorite thing about this piece is the contrasting back.
Ignore the fact that it’s wrinkly, like I said I put it on and I didn’t want to take it off! My dog Sophie loved it as well.
Since this was the $49 I knew I would only be getting one surprise item, and luckily for me, I knew before it even arrived that I was going to like it! Check out these pants!
// Tank: Gap Fit // Pants: Golden Tote // Sandals: Target //
These Priddy by Puella Slouchy pants are honestly the most comfortable pants I have ever worn! When I put them on my mom suggested I get another pair so I can wear one Monday – Wednesday, the other Thursday – Saturday, and no pants on Sunday. Hmm. Awkward.
So far I have worn these to lunch, on a plane, grocery shopping, meditation class, on a road trip, to breakfast, to bed, on another plane, and around the house. I have worn these so much I am beginning to think two pairs is a good idea.
I ended up getting a second pair in a printed pattern last week which I found through the Golden Tote Trading/Selling Facebook Group. I have so many more ideas on how to dress these up by pairing them with a graphic tee, colorful blazer, or my new sandals. I can see these being dressed up too, with a cute blouse, or my absolute favorite pair of black and gold pumps. Oh how I need to get back to Australia for clothes and shoes!
The jumpsuit was the last thing I tried, and unfortunately I couldn’t get the elastic waist around my hips. I thought the fabric was gorgeous, even more so in person then the online photos so I snapped a few shots of it before packing it in my tote to take to the post office.
Golden Tote is a surprise grab bag service. Each month the girls at Golden Tote pull together a collection of gorgeous clothes and offer two tote sales:
- The $49 Tote: You select one item from the collection and they fill your tote with 1-2 more surprise pieces. You end up with a gorgeous collection of 2-3 items worth up to $200.
- The $149 Tote: You select two items from the collection and they will fill your tote with an additional 3-5 surprise items. When your tote arrives you have a beautiful bag with 5-7 items worth up to a $600 value.
All of the surprise items will be genuine surprises and not something you’ll have seen in their collection, picked specifically for you based on a style profile you fill out. You can also purchase additional items from that month and previous months collections in the online boutique until supplies run out.
One of the things I love about Golden Tote is that I feel like they are ahead of the trend when it comes to certain fashions. I just found one of my February tote picks today online, and have seen similar dresses on J.Crew Factory and Zappos this summer.
Have you tried Golden Tote?
What do you think about the items I picked this month?
