I left last night for Australia, and am currently laid over in San Francisco enjoying time with one of my closest friends Lauren for the weekend, before continuing the trek to the other side of the world. In honor of Australia Week, and being about 4 hours short of halfway there, I decided that this week’s Friday Favorites will include my favorite things about life Down Under. I could go on and on about the things I love down there, but I’ll keep it to five.
1.// Favorite Cuppa: English Breakfast Tea – Made by an Aussie
You have probably heard that Brits like their tea, and while I am not denying that, Aussies will give them a run for their money. When Ben and I first started dating I was shocked by the enormous amount of tea this boy drank. I knew if I wanted to make things work with this guy I had to start drinking tea.
Although I drink a lot more tea now than ever, my absolute favorite is when Ben makes it for me. I don’t know what he does that I do differently, but it’s the perfect amount of tea leaves, milk, and sugar.
Oh, and that yummy looking cake in the collage above is my ridiculously awesome Carrot Cake with Cinnamon Gaze.. perfect with a cup of tea!
2.// Favorite Animal: Kangaroos!!
You probably knew I was going to include kangaroos somewhere in my favorite things, I can’t get enough of Roo Spotting on the farm, even on days when the roos are lacking it is my favorite thing to do! [PS. tomorrow is “roo spotting” day on the blog, check back then to see more photos and video of kangaroos in their natural habitat.]
3.// Favorite Thing about Eating Out: No chain restaurants!
It’s really hard to pick a restaurant meal that I don’t love in Australia; from the charming cafes to the farm to table restaurants it’s really hard to go wrong. The thing I absolutely love about Australian restaurants is that nothing is a chain. Sure, there is McDonalds, Subway, and Burger King (called Hungry Jacks), but unlike in America where you find an Applebee’s or Chili’s on every corner, in Australia you’d be hard pressed to find more than one of your favorite restaurant.
4.// Favorite Thing about the Aussie Lifestyle: The Simple Life
Nine years ago when I went to Australia for the first time I came back and said, “it’s just like America… 50 years ago.” After living in Australia for three months my answer to how things are in OZ is no different, I like to call it The Simple Life. We have no air conditioning or heat in our house, we have no cable TV, and we have no dishwasher or clothes dryer. The luxuries I grew up with in America are nonexistent for me in Australia, and to be perfectly honest, I really don’t mind it.
Don’t be fooled though, I never look that happy while doing dishes.
5.// Favorite Thing about the People: Friendliest bunch I’ve Met!
Ever meet an Aussie you didn’t like? Me either.
Australian’s are the most friendly, laid back people I know. The saying, “no worries mate” seems to be common place over there as Aussies tend to relax and go with the flow. I am more of a planner, so living in a laid back country has definitely chilled me out a bit.
This post is a part of Australia Week, a collection of long lost posts (aka should have been posts) and pictures from my first three months living in Down Under. Check back tomorrow as for more adventures as Australia Week continues…
