One week from today is one of the biggest sporting events in Australia… The Melbourne Cup. Never heard of it? No worries, I hadn’t either before moving Down Under. The Melbourne Cup is Australia’s major thoroughbred horse race – think Kentucky Derby – but bigger. With over $6.2 million in prize money, the Melbourne Cup is the richest race in the world, although my Aussie boyfriend will tell you the purse is second to the notoriety that comes with winning the cup.
Almost as important as the actual race is the fashion. Australian racing season is the time to see and be seen, and partake in Fashions on the Field – a fashion competition started in the 1960’s showcasing women’s and men’s spring fashion.
According to all my Australian housemates (and the boyfriend) racing season in Australia calls for new dresses and fascinators. This is the first time I will be delving into the race day fashion scene here in Australia, so I picked out some outfits I would wear to next weeks events, as well as other races this spring.
