Designing the perfect living room is similar to selecting the perfect outfit – you start with your basic piece let’s say it’s a dress, then comes the shoes, hair, makeup, and all accessories to make that outfit stand out! What I love about fashion is that it allows you to step outside of your comfort zone and experiment with different styles, the same can be said about designing as well.
I have lived all over the US and in each location I had a different style when it came to designing my apartment, and let’s be honest I probably dressed a bit differently when I lived in each location as well. In Philadelphia I had a top floor studio with 11ft ceilings and windows that filled 10 of those feet – keep in mind it was one giant room with kitchen, bedroom, and living all in one space! In Orlando, I was inspired by a more down home/ pottery barn feel with comfortable couches and burlap lamp shades. Now that I am living in Australia… well, I moved into a house with three boys – so I didn’t get much say in our décor.
In Philadelphia I let the windows and view speak for themselves keeping things adopting a minimalist style.
In Orlando I took a nod straight from a Pottery Barn catalogue and accessorized with lamps from , and accessories from IKEA.
That leaves me a lot of time to day dream about the perfect living space when I move – which is happening soon I swear.
Just like my fashion style (J.Crew, Madewell, Anthropologie, and Ann Taylor LOFT), I tend to stick with those comfortable lived-in styles like Pottery Barn for interiors… paired with a few pieces from The Company Store, Crate and Barrel, and Target – we can’t forget about Target.
But we are day dreaming here – and who doesn’t like a little bit of that every once in a while?
Enter Modani Modern Furniture: what I would consider the Black House | White Market of the furniture world. Their furniture is modern and contemporary, and the color palette for most item’s is a crisp white, black, wood accented, or features glass tops or finishes – which leaves lots of room for accessorizing!
I tried so hard to break out of my comfort zone while looking at the virtual tours of their gorgeous showrooms checking out the ways the pros paired black couches with sleek lines to glass tables, and bold accessories, but my eyes kept going back to the wood accents. Then I realized something… given their furniture selections and a few accessories I found at Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel I could easily blend my comfortable lived-in style with their sleek modern look.

It all started with the couch… everywhere I have lived I have gone with a white or ivory colored couch because white is a blank slate with endless possibilities.
Then the lamp. I have wanted a lamp like this for quite some time. It’s a piece that’s in style now and will be around for years to come – which is important when selecting furniture. After that came the bookshelves and mirror as more wood accent pieces. Now for the fun part accessories!
I picked out the deer face (possibly because I have a boy sitting next to me who just loves the idea of a deer head in our house) but it was the deer head that steered me in the direction I wanted to go in… modern log cabin (is there such a thing?). When I finished putting together my room it reminded me of fall leaves, plaid shirts, and my favorite chunky knit scarves. Brown leather boots, hot chocolates, and fireplaces. This was room became a room I want to curl up in every night.
So you tell me.. does your decorating style reflect your clothing style as well? Or do you step out of your comfort zone and do something different when decorating?
