The best way to wrap up a week is with cocktails in beautiful weather… and that is exactly how my weekend kicked off!
Since we are back to eating paleo we made apple vodka slushies and sat in our front yard people watching and chatting for an hour before I got ready for dinner. I went out for a delicious meal at the Burwood Inn with my friend Hannah, while Ben…. played video games when he wasn’t busy being our chauffer – what a sweet guy!
After laying around all Saturday morning we finally got up the motivation to tackle a project we have needed to address for a long time: the Sunroom/Office!
I didn’t take many before pictures like I should have because once we started to move one thing out of here we didn’t stop. But step one was taking everything out of the room and putting it in our bedroom before the dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, moping, and scrubbing took place.
This is everything removed, and in the bedroom…
I actually thought that there was a heap of sand or really scratched floors under this carpet. Nope, that’s dust!
Saturday was brutally hot, and this is our sunroom we are talking about, so it didn’t take long before we needed a break from cleaning. We ended up watching three episodes of Swamp People. I’ve never seen swamp people before, and despite growing up in Florida never seen anyone wrestle an alligator until now. The show was actually pretty interesting, but the best part was listening to Ben impersonate the southern accent. It’s terrible!!
After finishing the final hour of gator catching we got back into the cleaning… then cleaned ourselves up for a movie and pizza date at the Regal Cinema. The theme of the night was “New York” and the theatre had music and food to fit before the feature film, Annie!
We both enjoyed the movie, which I just equate to a modern day version of the classic… you know if the old Annie had a twitter and instagram.
Sunday morning we headed to a small local café for breakfast we heard was good. After finding out they were closed on Sunday we tried two more cafes, but neither had a gluten free menu. We ultimately “settled” on Paleo Café. But does anyone really settle on the Paleo Café? It’s freaking delicious!
We took our muffins and drinks to go and headed to the beach to eat by the water.
Shark week/watch is still going on.. after 7 days of beach closures the 1700kg shark just refuses to leave the area – shark you are driving me nuts!! Despite the closures there were 11 surfers on the water and one guy dipping his toes in. Aside from that, not a soul in the sand. It’s actually kind of amazing to see.
We got stuck back in the cleaning following breakfast and I couldn’t be more pleased with how our sunroom/office turned out.
It’s not decorated entirely as I would love for it to be… but for using what we have, pitching the garbage, and just tidying up, making it a tolerable working space for the next few months we’re living in this house, I’d say we did a good job.
We wrapped up the afternoon with a lunch that we just threw together and grilled amid the cleaning… let me tell ya, this lunch was amazing!!!
We rewarded ourselves for cleaning out the sunroom with a trip back to The Regal to tick another movie off my “Best Picture” goal.
Now before I get into how good Whiplash was, and it is seriously GOOD, I have to tell you the big goof I made.
The Regal offers free wine and cheese during their Sunday night movie showings which is lovely because you really feel like you have been invited to someone’s house and are watching a movie with them. The manager George is a delight and always chats with Ben and I before and after every movie. But here is where I made the goof…
To any normal person this looks like a cup of water, and two glasses of wine. To me, I thought this was water, lemon water, and wine. Imagine my surprise when I took a sip of my lemon water and tasted wine. Could just be me, but I reckon my water turned to wine yesterday. Or I couldn’t see anything in the dark.
Back to the movie…
Whiplash in one word, is intense. I am pretty sure there are parts of the movies where I just didn’t breathe because I was so sucked into what was happening. There were cheers and applause at the conclusion of the movie… was it because it was so gosh darn good? Or because people could finally breathe now that it was over? I’m not sure.
J. K. Simmons, who plays the instructor won the Golden Globe for best supporting actor for this movie, and he is nominated for, and favored to win, the Academy Award for it as well. He is brilliant, I can’t think of anyone else who would be better for this part. The student, Miles Teller, does all his own drumming in the movie as well. They are both fantastic!
I know this was the last showing of Whiplash in Newcastle, but if you happen to find it in a theatre near you, I highly encourage you to see it. It’s on the top of my Best Picture list at the moment.
That wraps up our weekend, and the calm before the storm that will be Australia Day weekend.. yep, look out for that one next week!
How do you stay motivated while cleaning?
What did you get up to on the weekend?
