This weekend Ben and I took the trip we have been planning for well over a year, and are currently soaking up the Florida sunshine with my family in Tampa. I am so excited to be back home and surrounded by the people I love most.. minus my brother who is coming up next weekend… to get here was quite the journey.
On Saturday morning, after getting 3 hours of sleep Ben and I finished packing our bags and were out of the house by 6am, to catch a train down to Sydney. The morning was a blur, riding the train, trying our hardest not to fall asleep so we could get adjusted to the time in Florida as easily as possible (as I am typing this Ben is passed out next to me, so I am not sure how well that worked).
When we got to the airport we had a bit of a surprise when asked abou Ben’s visa to visit the US.. amid all of our planning we totally forgot he would need one. Crisis averted when we found out that visitors visas last 2 years so he had about 2 months remaining.
We made it through customs, secutrity, and down towards the gate stopping for breakfasst and magazines before making our way to our seats on the plane… where we would spend the next 14 hours.
The woman who sat next to Ben was super sweet, and I was on the aisle, as usual, for easy access to the bathroom. I started watching Foxcatcher (btw, super impressed with all of the movie options on Delta’s International Flights) and waited for dinner. Not so impressed by the dinner.
This is where things get boring… we sat for hours, I watched Jane the Virgin for the first time – fantastic!, and slept. I can’t sleep on planes. Despite all the pillows, blankets, and comfortable clothing I just couldn’t manage sleeping beyond an hour at a time. When I finally gave up I turned on the Italian film Human Capital.
Luckliy I managed to finish the movie with 6 minutes left on the flight. I highly recommend this one! It wouldn’t normally be my choice movie for a flight, as it’s in Italian and requires full concentrations for the subtitles, but it was so good!! If you can find it, rent it!!
Finally we were off the plane and making our way through customs in Los Angeles, followed by security.
Four hours later we were off the plane and greeted by my parents and little sister. It was so wonderful to see them all again, words can’t describe the feeling of seeing family for the first time after being separated by half of the world for so long.
Went straight home where my mom had prepared lobster rolls for dinner, and my favorite, apple pie; a totally delicious surprise!
We were exacusted by the time we finished dinner from our full day of traveling so we headed to bed to rest up before our pool day Sunday.
Pool plans were a bit derailed the next day as the weaather was actually quite chilly. After breakfast, Ben’s first cinnamon roll ever!! (mom spent 2 days making them from scratch), we hung out with my parents for the morning, chating away about everything under the sun.
Since the pool plans were thrown off on account of the cold weather we decided our time would be best spent at Cigar City Brewpub taking a tour of their brewery and sampling the beers. We met up with my best friend Nigel for the tour and had a great time learning about the brewery started, what goes into the bottling processes, and how the beer is made/distributed.
We raced home, only forgetting what side of the road we were supposed to drive on once, and got home in time for dinner before headding to our old neighbors house for game night.
Game night is a tradition for our families around the holiday, but because we wern’t here in Deccember, and their daughter was in town too with her fiance we all had a mid year game night Sunday night too!
Our game nights are full of wine, beer, dessert, and lots of jokes… and lots of winning for the girls team.
I loved being able to introduce Ben to theiir family and invlving him in one of my favorite tradiions. He fits right in with the group, which is exactly what I expected would happen.
We have such a busy week ahead of us, and I am so excited about spending all of that time with Ben and my family.
What is the longest flight you have been on?
What was the highlight of your weekend?
